Jamboree 2018: Venue & Vibe

Jamboree 2018 was held in a number of venues across the Dartington Hall estate – a site that has been linked with visual art & experimental practice for many years.

Dartington Hall Estate
Dartington is cited as the place where Arts Council England was conceived and is currently the home to the forward-thinking Schumacher College, which is a leading international centre for sustainable education. It was also the site of the internationally renowned Dartington College of Arts from 1961 to 2008 (inspired and influenced by the cross-disciplinarity and post-modern modes of practice that emerged from Black Mountain College in North Carolina in the 1950s).

The Hex
The majority of the Jamboree Programme was held in ‘The Hex’ a self-contained venue on the main estate and nearby studio spaces. Participants stayed at the on-site campsite, a 25min walk from the main venues.

Jamboree ‘took over’ The Hex & its surrounding grounds, adding an entrance shelter & seating area constructed from scaffolding; ‘chill out’ tents stocked with blankets & seating & decorated with lights in the evenings; handmade signs, banners, bunting & an info point with a constant flowing supply of free snacks, tea & general advice/support on offer. We also invited local food & coffee providers to sell hot food on the hard standing outside.

The Campsite

At the campsite we added toilets, lighting, bunting & flags to mark out camping zones (family/quiet/party!), In the mornings, Jamboree 2018 participant Carly Seller generously led free yoga sessions to help people prepare for the day ahead.

All shower blocks & main toilets at the campsite and The Hex were stocked with baskets of complimentary goods to share (sun cream, shower gel, deodorant, bite spray etc etc) and we even brought a few spare tents for the inevitable moment of someone arriving without their tent poles!
